Whether you're in the market for a chair for the common room, old Harvard paraphernalia, or just a cut and color, this is the place for you. About Hair both hawks obscure antiquarian finds and not-so-obscure Aveda, KMS, and their own line of hair products, though the antique store only opens when no one is getting a trim. Shampoo and cut is $30+ (there's typically a 20% discount for students); perms $55+; coloring $40+. About Hair also offers post-hairdo shiatsu and Swedish massage ($1/min) for those who need a little extra pampering. Appointments recommended, but walk-ins welcome.

Your Hair prides itself on “multicultural haircare” for men and women. Their stylists are multi-lingual and their services multitudinous, with an emphasis on fades and relaxers (pricing varies). Basic haircuts in this late '70s time warp go for $10-15. Shampoos and other services are extra. African hair braiding, clipper cuts, beard trims, and manicures also available. Call for an appointment.

Step right up—cheapest in the Square! André is committed to keeping salon haircare affordable for students. Haircuts $10; wash, cut, and dry $25. Free cut with full foil highlights ($75+). The green and white linoleum and peeling '80s posters may not be the most upscale, but it beats the clinical sterility of Great Cuts. André also cheerfully corrects your hair horrors. Maybe you got a lousy cut at Vidal Sassoon; maybe you had a little incident with a bottle of vodka and a Weed Wacker—either way, corrections are still only $10. Paul Mitchell and Nexxus products available.

French for “nothing special,” the 105-year-old La Flamme is often so swamped with students that you have to slog through a half-dozen back issues of Car and Driver before getting a cut. Most opinions on La Flamme are favorable, but you may want to let your roommate try it first. If nothing else, it's cheaper, safer, and generally greater than Great Cuts. Shampoo, cut, and dry for both men and women (though we've never seen a woman take this offer) $19, without shampoo $14. The staff is mostly friendly, though some only ask one question: “What number?” If you guess wrong (they want to know your preferred clipper attachment size), you'll learn, at least, for the next time. Cash/checks only. No appointments.
