In the heart of Central Square, a mecca of Indian cuisine, you'll find this unassuming and wallet-friendly nook. The atmosphere is homey and authentic, from the soft Indian music playing in the kitchen to the shimmering ethnic tapestries on the wall. The menu carries all the conventional Indian favorites; for a delectable sampling, try the huge combo platters for one ($12-14) or two ($20-30): a deal-steal that serves up several entrees (normally $7-12 each), along with onion chutney, basmati rice, daal, soup, coffee, and dessert. Daily chicken and lamb specials are favorites among the restaurant's loyal clientele. All-you-can-eat Indian buffet ($6) daily 11am-3pm. Entrees $7-12, $2 discount if you get take-out.

Halfway between Harvard and Central Square, India Castle serves up classic Indian cuisine in its large, casual interior. Though the menu presents a dizzying array of options, whatever dish you select will be marinated in curious spices leaving you anxious for another bite. The extensive variety of Indian breads ($2-4), plain or stuffed with lamb and spices, makes a great way to start your meal. If the spices prove too much, the refreshing “Mango Special Drink” and mango lassi (both $2.50) will cool down your scorched mouth. All-you-can-eat lunch buffet ($7) daily 11:30am-3:30pm. Free delivery. Entrees $11-20.

If you think you'll be impressing all your friends with exotic spices and saris from your last trip to India, think again: it's probably all conveniently stocked at Shalimar. In addition to the variety of foodstuffs sold in bulk, Shalimar also sells a wide variety of ready-made sauces so that you too can feign mastery of korma. Not interested in cookbooks and do-it-yourself dosa batter? The small eatery in the back serves reasonably-priced pakora, samosas, sweets, and combo specials ($6.25-8) for eat-in or take-out. Bollywood fans can stay in touch with the latest via the ever-growing library of video rentals ($20 deposit, $1/rental), while those who actually want to look the part can dive into the haven of authentic saris ($50-100), bindis, and jewelry. Also stocks DVDs, CDs, and casette tapes.

At Royal Bengal, every sauce is different, and the sense of seasoning is most unusual, you can choose from an array of traditional Northern Indian fare, but the menu’s, also swimming with two dozens of unique Bengali dishes. All Bengali foods are prepared with extraordinary care, subtly spiced, and they’re cooked with mustard oil, which is greatly healthy for the heart. Best of all, all fishes are freshly imported from Bengal, and they’re made-to-order; so you can have them while they’re freshest and contains the most possible zest.
The 32-seat room shows loving touches on a budget--Indian wall hangings, folk art and posters fix the ethnic identity, and servers wear traditional Bengali garb. White tablecloths and pink cloth napkins dress up the look for patrons from MIT and Bengalis delighted to have some home-cooking.
