This branch of the Cingular Wireless stores, has a large selection of phones on the floor and a knowledgeable, very helpful staff. Definitely a busy branch, it is a rare occasion that there are no customers. If you think you will need lots of help be sure to go well before the lunch breaks start or well after.

Conveniently located in the middle of Harvard Square, Radio Shack sponsors two carriers, Sprint PCS and Verizon. The store stocks a good selection of phones, but you may want to check its CambridgeSide Galleria location (617-577-0024) for even more choices and a staff that won't pressure you into signing up for a plan. Radio Shack also features a variety of overpriced televisions, stereos, and gadgets that you're probably better off buying at Best Buy or Costco. But the location can't be beat and there's a good bet that they'll have what you're looking for—especially if what you're looking for is an annoying salesman trying to convince you to sign up for a credit card you don't need.

Located right next to the Yard, T-mobile provides another cellular option, though few rave about their coverage. It may showcase the US's largest GSM network (Global Systems for Mobiles, the international standard for mobile technology), but unfortunately the signals aren't the clearest or most reliable around Boston. All brands of phones offered; 600 nationwide anytime minutes go for a reasonable $40.
