Harvard House of Pizza menu consists of foods ranging from pizza, pasta and calzones, to salads, subs and wraps. All their dough and sauce are made fresh on the premises every single day!
Choose from an assortment of custom pies, or make your own from a wide selection of fresh veggies and meats. If you're not in the mood for pizza, try one of their hearty meatball grinders or “steak bomb” subs, for a greasy, yet completely filling meal that probably won't help you to land the cover of “H-Bomb” but will at least keep you on the writing staff. And why stop there? HHP's Baklava, a crunchy, syrupy delight, inspires even some of the most apathetic Harvardian to make the quarter-mile trek to this unassuming and inexpensive pizza parlor. Free delivery available (especially good for Quadlings).

For such a popular Rock nightclub, who knew that the food could be amazing? One of the top places one must go to before leaving Boston. Opened as a Lebanese restaurant in 1970, the Middle East spans three storefronts filled with throngs of patch-covered jackets and wallet chains who come to enjoy a provocative symbiosis of sensuous Middle-eastern cuisine (falafel sandwiches $3.75), belly-dancing (W), and cutting-edge modern American rock and punk acts. Featuring live bands every night, the Middle East is a major landmark on any tour of Boston's alternative music scene, with no less than 3 separate stages. Local and regional bands, including Harvard's own, play in the small upstairs area, while larger names grace the more spacious downstairs. Music ranges from ska to hip-hop, but leans in favor of experimental acts testing the limits of what can be called music. Good selection of foreign and domestic beers (bottles $3.50). Cover $8-10 upstairs, $12-25 downstairs. Check the website for a full list of musical acts. The restaurant area features acoustic performances and folk music and never charges a cover. The two eating areas inside the club provide delicious and affordable middle eastern food. For fancier edibles, check out ZuZu which is a part of the Middle East complex but has its own distinct personality.

In the basement of “Upstairs on the Square” sits another one of those ‘Harvard' bars, Grendel's, a mountain-town pub shoehorned into contemporary Cambridge. Most nights of the week Grendel's is filled with a lively mix of locals, grads, undergrads, and the occasional professor, who all huddle around cozy, dimly-lit tables for an atmosphere that's more low-key than anything its nearby competitors can provide. Compared to the nearly perpetual happy hours at Grendel's, other bars seem downright melancholy. The crowded red-bricked basement interior, faux-Tuscan tiled tables, and small plates make for a medieval dining hall meets college pub experience. The menu is a motley mix of cuisines, from cheeseburgers and pizza ($5.50) to falafel. Everything is half-price with min. beverage purchase of $3 daily 5-7:30pm and Su-Th 9-11:30pm. Express lunch specials M-F go for only $3.95. A wonderful way to round off the weekend, “The Sunday Seven” menu features 7 items at $1 each, again with $3 min. beverage purchase. Youngsters, beware: they frequently don't admit those under 21 after 5pm (especially F and Sa), so call ahead. Entrees $5-8.
The beers on tap are an excellent variety of microbrews and imports (no “Bud” here, but at $4/pint Paulaner Hefeweizen has risen as a crowd favorite). The Grendel's Happy Hour offers half-price menu items with min. $3 drinks (daily 5-7:30pm and Su-Th 9-11:30pm). Cheap, tasty food and a warm-fuzzy-glo atmosphere make Grendel's a convenient budget locale for those who like to munch while they imbibe.

From the owners of Grafton Street and Redline comes a neighborhood bar that brings everything its siblings do, but with even more pretension. Grad students and young locals, as well as the occasional Quadling, flock to Temple Bar in droves on weekend nights to mingle and drink in style, while a more subdued after-work crowd dominates on weeknights. The seasonal menu features New American cuisine with hints of everything from Irish to Japanese fare. The portions are huge, and everything from appetizers ($8-10) to entrees ($15-20) is sauteed or coated with creative and distinct sauces. Come for dinner and stay for drinks to watch this temple come to life. Wine $6-7 per glass, beer $4-4.50. Don't forget Brunch on Saturday and Sunday!

The Cheesecake Factory, a popular chain restaurant, has a huge menu, huge portions, and often a huge wait to be seated.
The restaurant does not offer a children's menu, however, kids are likely to enjoy the Roadside Sliders appetizer ($5.95) which features mini bite-sized burgers, quesadillas ($6.95), or cheese or pepperoni pizza ($7.95). Consider asking for an extra plate to share your meal with your kids; there'll be plenty to go around. Adults who successfully slog through the voluminous menu may order appetizers (we love the tex-mex eggrolls), gourmet pizza and pasta, burgers, tacos, homestyle favorites, salads, sandwiches, and ethnic specialties.
Brunch is served daily (Sunday brunch offers a larger menu) until 2pm. The kids' brunch (Sunday only) includes french toast, bacon, and strawberries for $5.95.
As its name implies, the variety of luscious cheesecakes (and other desserts) is mind boggling. Save some room to give them a try!

The owner compares her second-hand merchandise to oceanic treasures that have washed up on shore: happy beach-combing through massive revolving racks. While the merchandise is far from designer, everything is tenderly selected by the proprietress, making sifting unnecessary. A dazzlingly garish array of sequined, bobbled, macraméd, and feathered clothing will delight bohemians and trashy trick-or-treaters; slightly more subdued are the Hawaiian and guyabara shirts ($14-25), old school tuxes, and second-hand jeans ($20+), more '80s-tapered than hippy-flared. Vintage jewelry and sunglasses for under $10.

At the alterna-chic Hootenanny, slick designer brands such as mod-bod Ben Sherman (shirts $59-80), retro-Brit Fred Perry (a whopping $70 for a polo shirt), and monkey-face Paul Frank (shirts $20) abound, complemented by lashings of Dickies pants, Levi's bags, and Diesel shoes. The store shows its real wild side in the back section, however, with black-and-red PVC and lace-trimmed outfits (men's and women's) for that S&M/goth look you like to wear once in a while. Nowhere else in the Square will you find full fishnet-stocking Buddhists ($6-10)—we hope. Wigs ($15-35), angel wings ($60), and cheap hair-dye/make-up/jewelry also available for quick costume party fixes.

An eclectic collection of furniture, housewares, and knick-knacks grace the large and colorful showroom. You could likely furnish your entire room here, provided you're down with wicker and have a fondness for Near-Eastern-inspired trinkets. The oh-so-comfy papasan chairs run $55-140 including cushion. A good place to pick up unusual gifts and affordable indulgences, like chic blue martini glasses ($2) and funky picture frames ($4-20). Candles, bath scents, and incense round out the collection. 15% student discount July-Sept.

Exceptionally stylish for a Thai restaurant, Sugar & Spice caters to the bookish couples and graduate students who call Porter Square home. With curved, multi-colored walls, eye-catching lighting fixtures and an eclectic, international soundtrack, the dining area offers a modernist setting in which to enjoy a sprawling menu of Thai treats. Quiet, black-clad servers keep busy delivering extra dishes of tangy sweet-and-sour sauce or refilling water glasses.
