Contrary to what its name might imply, the Door Store actually sells no doors whatsoever, although the original branch in New York did construct tables out of (suprise!) doors. Today the store features 25 different sizes, shapes, and materials (like cherry, maple, oak, and more) from which you can order your own custom-made table ($200+) or buy parts and construct one yourself ($100+). Then, illuminate your table with multiple styles of paper lanterns ($7-25) and hide it from street view with window shades ($14-22).

The mysterious stranger with the sleek leather folio whips out his Mont Blanc fountain pen with a flourish. “Slate,” he says in response to your questioning gaze. “Bob Slate.” Who Bob is, and why he has an upscale office supply fetish, is a little unclear. Still, writers, artists, and anal-retentive paperclip geeks alike flock to this remarkable stationery store. Bob Slate offers journals of every shape and size and an extensive selection of classy greeting cards, wrapping paper, photo albums, and art supplies (particularly at the Mass. Ave. store). Custom-printed stationery $80-300+. Other stores, at 63 Church St. (617-547-7181) and 1975 Mass. Ave., just past Porter Square (617-547-8624), all have the same hours.
