Bertucci's may not recreate a North End-like atmosphere, but its convenient location and creative, top-notch brick-oven pizzas are nothing to scoff at. To attempt authenticity, try a large neapolitan thin-crust pizza ($18, good for 2 or 3 people; fight over the olive) or sample one of the many savory, generous pasta or meat entrees. The daily express lunch (11am-3pm) is a good way to get just as much quality (as well as free salad) for much less of your time and money (all entrees $8). Finally, a word about the hot rolls that come with meals: everyone loves them. The wait can be long—especially on weekend nights—call ahead to put your name on the list. Additional locations in Boston and along the east coast. Entrees $8-18.

Not so hidden (a smaller location is on Church St.), but very sweet, this store is the insatiable candy lover's dream store. More than 300+ bulk bins ($9.95/lb) will keep you busy mixing and matching nearly every treat imaginable, from trusty Hershey's bars and margarita jelly beans to more unusual gummi lobsters and white chocolate Reese's peanut butter cups. The enormous collection of naughty confections (think gummy butts and boob-shaped pasta) is perfect for your nervous, math nerd blockmate's birthday. More mainstream gifts for your Uncle Bob include the wide array of Harvard and Boston paraphernalia and a funny, edgy assortment of greeting cards and postcards. Check the 2nd floor for a sizeable sale section.

With the work of over 100 American artists and designers, MDF lives up to its claim of “Handcrafted accessories for the home from across the country,” in styles from '80s minimalism to Native American folk art to millennial modernism. Undulating glass vases, paper and wrought-iron lamps, and wood and steel clocks are gallery-perfect and inventively displayed. Decorative picture frames start at $28, but most gifts go up in price from there (average prices $75-$125). A tasteful, quirky, but expensive boutique.
