For those ladies ready to graduate from the Gap and enter the world of recruiting interviews, Ann Taylor specializes in pricier, more professional clothing (suits $250+, dress shirts $50-70). Although the selection is quite conservative (your mom might shop here), pretty dresses, seasonal evening attire ($150), and summer collections add a dash of elegant style to the trademark sophistication. Those under 5'4” will appreciate the complete petites collection. Check out the sales racks at the back for relatively good bargains. Multiple locations throughout the area, including the Boston:Prudential Center, Cambridge:CambridgeSide Galleria, Boston:Newbury Street., and Boston:Faneuil Hall.

The extent of traditional drugstore products sold at Colonial is limited to toothbrushes, tissues, and lip balm. But if you're dreaming of that distinctive scent infused only in a vintage 1806 cologne, welcome to the promised land. With over 1000 “hard-to-find fragrances,” Colonial calls itself “the people with absolutely no common scents.” A very knowledgeable and extremely friendly staff will help find that particular fragrance or teach you to sniff properly. They also carry expensive European body care supplies like $500 badger-hair shaving brushes, tooth powders old and new, tooth towels, sheep-udder liniment, and Evian skincare deatomizer.

Some crates, few barrels, but stack upon stack of neon-colored dish displays fill the 5 levels of this sparkling household goods store. Dozens of handy treasures lie in wait, from grapefruit knives ($6) to scone pans ($16) to a dozen varieties of coffee and espresso makers. Glasses start at $0.40 for juice and reach $12 for fancy Martini vessels, a must if you want the best-outfitted bar in your entryway (they also sell stirring kits and shakers). Prepare for an evening of culinary pampering at Harvest, one of the most upscale establishments in Harvard Square. With excellent service, a spacious interior, and an outdoor patio that manages to stay open until the early fall with the aid of heaters, Harvest aims to keep your body comfortable and then, when you're not looking, hit you over the head with its inventive, mouth-watering cuisine. But like all good things (and some illegal drugs), you'll be paying a hefty price for an experience that will leave you pleasantly euphoric, but not necessarily stuffed. With modestly-sized entrees that fall within the $24-33 dollar price range, your best bet would be to opt for Harvest's 3 course prix-fixe ($48/$60 with wine), a perfect sampling of the restaurant's culinary concoctions. The menu changes weekly, so the oyster stew you loved so much last time might have been replaced by the equally delicious salmon in lobster bouillon; however, with a consistent variety of gourmet seafood, pasta, and vegetarian options in addition to their 2 featured steaks, even the most discriminating connoisseurs will go home happy. Desserts ($8-9) range from the velvety vanilla bean creme brulée to the tangy key lime napoleon. Brunch ($33 prix-fixe) offered every Su.

Aluminium, clinically-clean, anti-clutter, minimalist: the MUT has attitude. As a store, its theme is found more in its new-age metallic take on vintage design than in any particular type of product—which is why you'll find assorted deck chairs next to kitchen appliances alongside magnifying glasses. Browse the neat rows of trinkets with a fabric-lined shopping basket and ponder whether you've time-warped into the past or the future. The MUT is a good stop if you're searching for a small, moderately funky gift that injects a touch of novelty into life's more mundane tools.

The Permanent Collection of 19th and 20th Century Useful Items looks back historically at the evolution of tools over the decades: how inventors defined and refined a tool; how times, changing needs, and available materials were reflected in these changes.
