In spite of what the first part of its name suggests, Brookline Lunch is located in Central Square in Cambridge. Even more misleading is the second part of the name, because even though this tiny mom-and-pop (literally mom-and-pop, as the place is run by an affable husband and wife duo) diner does have a lunch menu, the breakfast is without doubt the way to go: omelettes, bacon and eggs, and pancakes usually coming in at well under six dollars per generous serving.
The restaurant itself is unassuming, and not in the self-conscious hipster way of other 'unassuming' Central Square dives. It is tucked away on quiet (by day, anyway) Brookline Street directly across the street from TT the Bears. Inside, the ambience is warm and cozy in the winter and hot and stuffy in the summer; try to get a booth by the door. The walls are
exposed brick and covered with art from Out of the Blue gallery, another Central Square native.
Two menu items in particular which have recently brought me to the heights of gastronomic ecstasy are the chocolate
chip pancakes (like giant chocolate chip cookies...for breakfast!) and the spinach and feta omelet. The latter of these two dishes is what I would venture to call my "stand-by", and always comes with a generous portion of home fries, steamed veggies, and perhaps most importantly, pre-buttered whole wheat toast. This toast can be topped, upon request, by a perplexing jam made of plums, oranges, and fennel--not my personal favorite, but certainly worth a try.
While naysayers of the clan of the Lunch often criticize the service for being slow, I prefer to use the word 'leisurely.' Brookline Lunch is not the place to grab a quick bite before work. It is, rather, the place to grab that first and highly necessary bite with friends while piecing together the events of the previous night in order to figure out why everything in your apartment is now soaking wet.
