A converted 1897 Colonial Revival house, this family-run B&B boasts lovely accommodations 5-10min from Harvard Yard toward Inman Square. Small and intimate, the B&B gives its guests lots of personal attention. The 3 spacious guest rooms share a bathroom and are decorated with fresh flowers, Oriental rugs, and lace curtains. Included in the price are daily afternoon tea and homemade breakfast of bread, fruit, and crêpes, pancakes, or waffles. Rooms $75-190/night, higher rates in autumn; call for details. Very popular for Harvard's Commencement, the B&B begins taking reservations a litle more than a year in advance ($325 with a 4-night minimum). 5% of profits are donated to the Cambridge Action Fund. Free parking. Not wheelchair-accessible.

A short walk from Harvard Square, the Friendly is ideal for Harvard visitors. This quiet, immaculate B&B provides private bath, continental breakfast, and free parking. Housed in a century-old red Victorian, the 18 comfortable rooms are furnished in dark wood and are equipped with A/C, phones, cable TV, and queen-sized beds. Reserve on Jan. 2 at 10am for Commencement (rooms $177) and for May-Sept. Doubles $117-127. Winter rates $77-97. Not wheelchair-accessible.
