Art deco modern meets old country home in Sandrine's warm, dim dining room couched in the rich aromas that waft in from an open kitchen. This cozy, upscale, impress-your-date eatery has stood the test of time as a steadfast competitor in the changing world of pricey Harvard Square dining. Appetizers, like the crabmeat in avocado halves with grapefruit, reflect Sandrine's Alsatian focus, and although some of the entrees lack the same extraordinary flair and culinary excellence, you'll probably be too caught up in the romantic ambiance (no Harvard experience is complete without a pre-formal dinner date at Sandrine's) to notice. The spendthrift can also enjoy Sandrine's for a much less expensive lunch. Entrees $16-29.

Spice has surpassed the 5-year mark and become one of the more popular choices in the Square. Depending on how you feel about rubbing elbows (literally) with Harvard students and professors, the atmosphere could be described as cozy or cramped. Sample Thai classics such as chicken or beef satay ($6), spring rolls ($5.50), and, of course, pad thai ($8). If it's spice that you came for, try the green, red, or mango curries ($12); but if you're looking for sugar, you'll enjoy desserts like coconut, ginger, or green tea ice cream ($3). The lunch menu features most of the same items as the dinner menu but in smaller portions and lower prices. Entrees $8-16.

If the most exotic drink you know how to make consists of uncapping a bottle of Corona, the HSA Bartending Course just might be for you. After over 30 years of teaching students how to set up a bar, juice a lime, and mix sophisticated drinks, the HSA Bartending Course is still going strong. The 2-day Mixology and Training for Intervention Procedures by Servers of Alcohol (TIPS) certification courses run approximately 1 weekend per month at $165 for Harvard affiliates and $195 for others ($90 non-refundable deposit). After only 2 days, you'll be transformed into a slick, drink dispensing dynamo, all set for Reunion Jobs. Call or check the website for class dates and other pertinent information. Which came first: the Andover Shop or the Porc? It's a riddle for the ages. Gatsby-aficionados just might burst into tears over the “traditional and conservative linens,” shirts ($65-100) and ties (from $65) of every imaginable color, slacks ($65-200), and boxers ($19.50). Suits range from $450-950 off the rack and $1500-2500 custom-made (allow 4-6 weeks after measurement). All merchandise sports the private and oh-so-posh Andover label.
