In JP Licks, they roast their own organic and Fair Trade certified coffee in their original Jamaica Plain location, where they also make all of their ice cream, from the finest, freshest ingredients. They have 8 locations throughout the Boston area. Check their website for details.
With less character than the nearby Hong Kong, Yenching manages to serve up marginally better Chinese food to those who aren't necessarily too drunk to remember what they ate. Despite its location next to the Porcellian, Yenching has the interests of significantly less wealthy students in mind and keeps its prices relatively low. Try the Lake Tung Ting Shrimp ($10.50) for an unusual and surprisingly tasty dish, but head to Chinatown for authentic and inexpensive Chinese food. The daily luncheon combination is a good deal for a great deal of food ($6.25 for one entree, fried or white rice, and hot & sour or egg drop soup, served M-F 11:30am-4pm). Mandarin Dim Sum on Sa and Su (11:30am-2:30pm). Delivery after 5pm.

J. August's 2 floors feature the nicer, pay-a-little-more-than-at-the-bookstore selection of Harvard and graduate school insignia, baby apparel, and school supplies. The stuffed animals wearing a “somebody at Harvard loves me” shirt make cute (and simultaneously condescending) gifts for your state school friends. 10% discount with Harvard ID. 100% discount with Porcellian Club medallion.

Right across Mass. Ave. from Widener Library, Gnomon Copy is convenient for all photocopying. The copy center offers both change copiers and 1 copier that racks up a tab, so bring lots of change if you're not feeling lucky. Basic rates for copies: 7¢/page for the first 100 sheets, 6¢ for 500, 5¢ for 1,000, and 4¢ for 1,000+. Self-service 5¢. Color copies are $1 apiece. Gnomon will give additional discount quotes for large jobs. Faxing services: $2 per page plus telephone charge. Equipped with an in-house press, 2-color and off-set printing, Gnomon can do anything and everything to that essay of yours: laminating, binding, stapling, folding, etc. And instead of buying overpriced coursepacks, check them out from Lamont and xerox them here at almost 1/3 the cover price. Also has a location at Tufts University.

Bringing the sophistication of smoking back to jogger-happy, health-conscious Cambridge, Leavitt & Peirce stocks a huge variety of domestic and imported cigarettes ($4.95-19), handmade pipes, tobacco, and oodles of cigars ($1-15). Their accessories are not limited to smoking paraphernalia, but also feature timeless antiques and classic table-top games. Challenge your mind and lungs simultaneously in the smoky chess parlor upstairs, reminiscent of Gilded Age Harvard.

Zipa Jewelry is hard to see from the street on Mass Ave. in Harvard Square, and that must be why they call it A Hidden Treasure. But once you get inside, they have beautiful jewelry from a broad spectrum of designers from around the world. That includes silver, amber, pearls and semiprecious stones. Check out the selection online.

Graffiti is a place for quick notes. Know the hours of a business but not sure where to put it? Did something just happen at this place? Leave some graffiti.
Sometimes street view does not point exactly to the right place. You may need to "drive around" a bit.
