Though its name tells nothing of the Forest Cafe's cuisine, the sea of Mexican flags within quickly dispels any lingering expectations of toadstools and the like. Only a 10min walk away, this cafe may be worth it for inexpensive Mexican fare arguably better than that of the Square. House margaritas ($4.25-6.25) are supplemented by a nice variety of Mexican beer, all of which can help chase down the endless free chips, salsa, and guacamole, or quesadilla appetizers ($4-8). Specialty seafood dishes at the Forest Cafe are mildly disappointing and overpriced; stick to the cheaper enchilada and burrito variants ($8-12).

“Harvard Hole-in-the-Wall of Pizza-and-Other-Foods” would be a more appropriate name for this Mass. Ave. eatery. Choose from an assortment of custom pies (small $5.75-8.50, large $9.45-12.75), or make your own from a wide selection of fresh veggies and meats. If you're not in the mood for pizza, try one of their hearty meatball grinders (small $4.15, large $4.80) or “steak bomb” subs ($4.50/$5.15), for a greasy, yet completely filling meal that probably won't help you to land the cover of “H-Bomb” but will at least keep you on the writing staff. And why stop there? HHP's Baklava ($1), a crunchy, syrupy delight, inspires even some of the most apathetic Harvardian to make the quarter-mile trek to this unassuming and inexpensive pizza parlor. Free delivery available (especially good for Quadlings, $7 minimum).

From the makers of Redline and Grafton Street comes a neighborhood bar that brings everything its siblings do, but with even more pretension. Grad students and young locals, as well as the occasional Quadling, flock to Temple Bar in droves on weekend nights to mingle and drink in style, while a more subdued after-work crowd dominates on weeknights. The seasonal menu features New American cuisine with hints of everything from Irish to Japanese fare. The portions are huge, and everything from appetizers ($8-10) to entrees ($15-20) is sauteed or coated with creative and distinct sauces. Come for dinner and stay for drinks to watch this temple come to life. Wine $6-7 per glass, beer $4-4.50. Don't forget Brunch on Saturday and Sunday!

It's no Franklin Café, but Mass. Ave.'s answer to Back Bay and South End neighborhood bistro-bars brings casual yet refined gourmet a bit closer to home. Despite the dim lights and soulful music, the West Side Lounge is as conducive to conversation with an old friend as it is to a romantic outing. Weeknights, the restaurant caters to a handful of older neighborhood regulars; Law School students liven up the bar on weekends. Appetizers ($4-8) include a simple but flavorful beet and goat cheese salad ($7) and a savory potato pizza ($6). Entrees ($15-18), mostly meat and seafood, are original but too often overseasoned. We recommend going next door to finish your meal with Temple Bar's famous chocolate fondue, but if you can't be bothered, West Side Lounge serves cakes, tarts, and a fantastic crème brûlée ($6). Specialty drinks, such as a peach cosmopolitan or the ginger-infused martini, run $7-8.
