"Cantab" is short for "Cantabrigia," the medieval Latin name for what is now Cambridge, England. By extension, a "Cantab" or "Cantabrigian" is any resident of Cambridge -- England or Massachusetts.
The Cantab is best known for the wonderful Live Entertainment featured inside this smokey electic bar. From Bluegrass, Classic Soul and R&B, Open Mike Night, Poetry Reading on the Lower Level and Dancing on both levels. The Cantab is really one of those Neighborhood establishments that has stayed the test of time as new places build up around it. Joe Little Cook used to play here.
In addition to a full bar and wide assortment of domestic and imported beers, the Cantab offers a reasonably priced menu - including burgers, dinners & snacks. The chef from the now defunct Tim's Tavern works there. Kitchen open from 5pm-11pm nightly.
By day, the down-on-their-luck (or those who pretend to be) suck down beers and watch TV through the dingy room's thick clouds of smoke. At night, the action heats up via live entertainment (a Cantab staple since 1975). Grizzled, congenial bartenders look and act like they've seen it all.
Make sure you visit the ATM on the corner before entering; the lounge doesn't take plastic. If there are no parking spaces out front, check out the municipal lot in back.
Picante may not have the glitz and pseudo-Mexican ornamentation of Border Cafe, but the food is twice as authentic, the service twice as fast, and the portions twice as big. A self-proclaimed “health-conscious Mexican taqueria in the California style,” Picante delivers tasty renditions of Mexican standards in a low-key setting. Order and pay up front before picking up your over-stuffed cheese-and-bean dripping steak burrito ($6.50), chicken enchilada ($8.50), or cheese quesadilla ($3.25). Top it all off at the fresh salsa bar where you'll find 6 different salsas in varying degrees of mouth-scorching spiciness—beware of the Super Picante blend! On weekends (10am-2pm), Picante becomes a full-service restaurant for Mexican-style brunch, dishing up huevos rancheros, salsa pancakes, and the like. Also located at 217 Elm St., Somerville (Davis; 617-628-6394). Entrees $3-9.
