<div class="p"></div>Among the scores of nondescript brick warehouses that spot Kendall, the pink trim of the Garment District shines as a sign of the bargain- shopper's mecca within. You'll find an amazing array of used clothes, shoes, and accessories for men and women. Contemporary items in popular brands average $10-15. In the back room of the store, polyester and psychedelic-print vintage clothes overflow the racks. Brand-new chest wigs, pimp hats, boas, and granny glasses complement anything you may find, especially before Halloween. If you're not satisfied here, try Dollar-a-Pound Plus downstairs, the Garment District's low-brow bargain sister.

Pit kids and New Yorkers from private schools shop side by side here for all things denim and, well, urban. After choosing from skinny tanks ($24) and embroidered mini-skirts ($42) upstairs in women's, to novelty T-shirts ($28) and corduroy blazers ($89) at the 1st-floor men's, don't forget to head downstairs for fabulous clothing and houseware sales in the Bargain Basement. Pick up gift books like “Yiddish with Dick and Jane” and “150 Party Drinks,” among other quirky presents, including a wide assortment of board games. Like much of its local clientele, Newbury Comics inhabits the second floor of a Garage. This New England chain is really on to something: boasting the best prices on new releases in the Square, Newbury Comics also stocks the obscure albums you won't find at the local mall's generic music store, with the reliable inventory that you can't get at an independent record store. New CDs run $12-15, current vinyl $8-20, DVDs $12-28, and used CDs $6-10. There's also a relatively large selection of music videos and box sets. The younger skateboard crowd swarms around the extensive comics section, ranging from The Titans to Jughead and Archie, as well as the funky assortment of feather pillows, lava lamps, action figures, books, posters, music magazines, and punk trinkets. Return opened CD purchases for 30 days with receipt, but only if merchandise is defective. The store also buys used CDs. 22 locations throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island, including one at 332 Newbury St. (617-236-4930).

True to its name, Nomad could easily be the storage room of a traveler who spent his days collecting artisanal creations from Asia and Latin America. The considerable selection of accessories and furnishing range from Chinese slippers ($20) to silver hanging lamps ($88) and exquisitely embroidered vintage wedding shawls from India ($68). Don't forget to go downstairs for a complete selection of Nepali and Indian pillowcases ($28) and Kurdish rugs ($274-373). The colorful and pleasant clothing and jewelry selections (beaded earrings $14, sterling silver $100-200) allow you to adorn yourself with style and flair as unique as the rest of your abode.

Wholefoods is a veritable organic and vegan paradise, filled with top-of-line produce, flowers, meat, and organic, wheat and gluten-free health and food products. Limitless free samples are available at the cheese counter, which boasts the exotic selections Le Chevrot and Chimay Biere, in addition to standard gourmet fromages. The carry-out cuisine and fresh sushi bar are delectable, but even more divine are Whole Foods' desserts, including the pear frangipane tart ($20) and the mocha buttercream cake ($15). Despite being slightly overpriced, Wholefoods is still a more relaxing market than most—multiple daily food demos and cheerful, knowledgeable employees make even shopping a healthful experience.

ABP claims to be “the place of good bread,” but Hi-Rise Bakery's scented air, steamy windows, and worn wooden benches lend this snack spot an air of authenticity that no other local bakery approaches. Baked sweets like walnut chunk cookies ($2.50) or a unique vanilla bean loaf ($14, $2.50/slice) are decidedly non-prefab, and salads ($5-9.75), sandwiches ($6-8), and specialty drinks ($2-$3) round out the freshly-made options. Another branch by the <a href="http://cambridge.ma.povo.com/Cambridge_Community_College" class="new">Cambridge Community College</a> on Brattle St. carries a smaller variety of goods and is closer to <a href="http://cambridge.ma.povo.com/Harvard_Square">Harvard Square</a>, but more crowded.

A Harvard institution since 1882, The Harvard Coop is frequented by a diverse clientele of academics, tourists, and Cambridge residents. The bookstore, now managed by Barnes and Noble, occupies The Coop's privileged position on Mass. Ave. The top floor coursebook section's high prices have spawned student-run discount textbook sellers such as Redline Textbooks. A bridge leads to the Palmer Ave. location, where students can purchase anything else even remotely related to college life. Special services include custom book orders, worldwide shipping, author events, and a Harvard Authors section. Become a Coop member for $1, and you'll get a refund check at the end of the year for 6% of all your purchases. 15% off all Harvard apparel with student ID.

Located near the New Release section, you'll find a table and benches, with crayons and scrap paper on hand for those who need a break from books. Future illustrators in the crowd?
<div class="p"></div>The Coop for Kids has story time during the week. On Tuesdays at 11am, preschoolers are invited to hear a selection of engaging stories. Many new parents bring their babies along to join in the fun; it's a great spot to meet other parents and make new play pals.
<div class="p"></div>On Saturdays at 11am, children under 7 can participate in the story and craft hour. Stories and crafts often tie in with seasonal themes, like Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, Halloween, etc. Expect that your children will be occupied for about an hour.
<div class="p"></div>Refreshments (cookies and juice) are offered at both story times. Story hours are free and open to the public.
<div class="p"></div>Public restroom: Take the spiral staircase at the back of the store to the third floor. Bathroom is ahead and to the right, near the college entrance exam books.

Upscale but friendly, the spacious store features 12-13 brands of cosmetics—including Paula Dorf, Nars, Trish McEvoy, and Laura Mercier—all hand selected by the owner. Prices are on the mid- to high-end, but sometimes feeling pretty is worth the investment. Lipstick and glosses run $19-22, foundation around $30. They also carry a wide variety of fragrances and body moisturizers. Free makeup lessons (if you buy some of the products). Ask about makeup application for special events ($50).

Libby's sells a wide selection of domestic and foreign beers, though sadly, none of that delicious Juicy Juice. For patriots, Rolling Rock and Bud will cost $5.50/6-pack, while imported brews start at $7/6-pack (Killian's). Libby's is a lifesaver with a full stock of liquors and inexpensive international wines (Rum Roberto $9.50/L, Johnny Walker Black $43/L, Australian Merlot $7/.75L). The store also carries an excellent selection of mixers, gift-size bottles of many favorite brands, pocket-sized nips ($1-4), and some finer champagnes behind the counter. Don't visit after you have already done some partying, as the clerks refuse to sell to those who stumble in. No kegs.

Ask the locals and they'll tell you that this is the go-to place for Turkey Day. Birds are delivered to their store in <a href="http://cambridge.ma.povo.com/">Cambridge </a> according to the Mayflower's specifications, sized in two-pound increments: from 10-12 lbs. up to 28-30+ lbs. <div class="p"></div>This is one of Boston's largest toy stores. They have a wide variety of natural toys for infants up to teens. Toys with a twist. Stellabella Toys, voted "Best of Boston" and "Best of New England" for 2006, is the kind of store parents dream of. It has a wonderful selection of toys across the ages and offers parent/child classes (Inman Square).
<div class="p"></div>The user-friendly store has it all - a large offering of infant and developmental toys, Brio trains, Playmobil, Kinex, Legos and more. Parents-in-training will gravitate toward the Corolle dolls and dress-up clothes. Plus, you'll find infant equipment, including the ERGO Baby Carrier and Baby Bjorn potty seats and toilet trainers.
<div class="p"></div>In the section devoted to art supplies and art kits, you'll find Alex, Make it Fun, and Creativity for Kids kits. Puzzles, books, children's CDs, musical instruments, riding toys, and wagons round out the offerings.
<div class="p"></div>Tip: Parents will enjoy on-going events like the Saturday morning sing-a-longs and the new parents coffee hour on Friday mornings. Music Together and art classes are also scheduled throughout the year.

This red-clapboard store has a homespun look and reasonable prices, keeping Quadlings happily tipsy (although for heavy-duty hard alcohol purchases, it's best to head up to Liquor World in Porter Square). Nearly 1000 wines, many of which sell for $6-9, and over 200 imported and domestic beers ($6/6-pack of Bud, $12/6-pack Anchor Steam) pack this small store, not to mention a nice but limited selection of New England cheeses. Lots of locally brewed beers, as well as a decent selection of regional wines. Free wine tastings held Sa 2-5pm.

<div class="p"></div>This CVS in <a href="http://cambridge.ma.povo.com/Harvard_Square">Harvard Square</a> is great. If you suddenly notice your roommates avoiding you, perhaps it's time to step away from the PlayStation and make a trip to CVS for the Square's widest array of toiletries and hygiene items, from shampoo to eye care to skin products. The 2-story Mass. Ave. store is significantly larger and offers an extensive refrigerated aisle (check out the microwave meals), a massive pharmacy, and a hardware section complete with duct tape and hammers. For late night medical emergencies, the Porter CVS is the closest 24hr pharmacy to the Square. Both stores have film developing: at the Harvard Square stores $10 for 3” prints from a 24 exp. roll; at the Porter Square store overnight or standard Kodak developing costs $9/24 exp., $13/36 exp. The photo center at the Harvard Square/Massachusetts Ave. location also provides passport photos ($12/4 photos). A free CVS Care card grants savings on storebrand items, as well as pharmacy and off-the-shelf medical products.

SALE! The word is all that much more meaningful at Berk's, where massive end-of-season sales take up to 50-75% off their wide variety of name-brand shoes, sandals, and boots. The selection tends toward the funky and includes Steve Madden, Doc Marten, RocketDog, Diesel, Lucini, Destroy, and Frye, from silver-glittered platforms to cowboy boots. Prices are reasonable, starting at $20 for flats and sneakers (they stock Converse, Puma, and Saucony, among others), and reaching $200 for knee-high, cut-out platform boots. Comfort shoes have made their way into nearly half of the store, lining the walls with the likes of Dansko, Birkenstock, and Naot. A men's section has recently emerged, though the selection, while trendy, is limited. Limited clothing and jewelry sections.

<div class="p"></div>C'est Bon Convenience, an offshoot of the popular bakery and sandwich shop chain, offers all the snack and drink essentials without the sketchiness of its predecessor. When Brain Break is less than stellar, head to C'est Bon for candy, chips, sandwiches, or a pint of your favorite ice cream. And when the weekend rolls around, or if you need to drink away the pain of a really bad Brain Break, check out their ample stock of affordable wines and beers, including beer balls. Harvard ID-holders rejoice—Crimson Cash is now accepted for all purchases, except alcohol. Mom and Dad may pay for those late-night munchies, but you're on your own for the 40s that inspire them.

Ever wish that the Dollar Store in your local mall sold more than plastic flowers and decade-old makeup? At Dollar-A-Pound Plus, you'll find funky used clothes, records, CDs, books, bags, belts, rollerskates, and even board games--if you're willing to search for them. You'll be digging on all fours with other shoppers, through massive piles of stuff. No false advertising here: the “Plus” stands for “plus a couple of quarters.” Clothes are $1.50/lb (75¢/lb on F), bric-a-brac is $1. No new deliveries Fridays—everything 50¢/lb.

Though often overshadowed by the neon paint and shattered glass of next-door Urban Outfitters, this little boutique offers a solid collection of clothing from popular designers like BCBG, Laundry, and French Connection. The wide selection of Mavi jeans ($65-120) or paperdenim&amp;cloth ($145-170) means that even if Jasmine Sola doesn't have the perfect pair, you won't have to go pantless.

Pearl deservedly calls itself the largest arts and craft discount supplier in the world. With 3 floors of beautiful craft, illustration, and fine art supplies, everyone from beginning sculptors to master woodworkers can find their holy grail. Take your pick of a maddening variety of brushes, markers and pens on the main floor, or head to the enormous downstairs space for photo frames, seasonal merchandise, portfolios, and glittering odds and ends. The less artistically inclined will delight in fun childhood items like doll sets, glow-in-the-dark star ceiling stickers, “The Last Supper” paint by numbers, and lots and lots of Play-Doh, while VES concentrators can take their time choosing between a wealth of acrylics and oil paints upstairs. Seasonal sales mark down a wide variety of items.

If you think you'll be impressing all your friends with exotic spices and saris from your last trip to India, think again: it's probably all conveniently stocked at Shalimar. In addition to the variety of foodstuffs sold in bulk, Shalimar also sells a wide variety of ready-made sauces so that you too can feign mastery of korma. Not interested in cookbooks and do-it-yourself dosa batter? The small eatery in the back serves reasonably-priced pakora, samosas, sweets, and combo specials ($6.25-8) for eat-in or take-out. Bollywood fans can stay in touch with the latest via the ever-growing library of video rentals ($20 deposit, $1/rental), while those who actually want to look the part can dive into the haven of authentic saris ($50-100), bindis, and jewelry. Also stocks DVDs, CDs, and casette tapes.

Contrary to what its name might imply, the Door Store actually sells no doors whatsoever, although the original branch in New York did construct tables out of (suprise!) doors. Today the store features 25 different sizes, shapes, and materials (like cherry, maple, oak, and more) from which you can order your own custom-made table ($200+) or buy parts and construct one yourself ($100+). Then, illuminate your table with multiple styles of paper lanterns ($7-25) and hide it from street view with window shades ($14-22).

<div class="p"></div>With an indefatigable doorman, banana tree, and pile of firewood in the winter, 7-11 is regrettably one of the only places in the Square to find anything to eat, smoke, or throw at cars after 2am. Pre-made subs, rotating dogs of mystery meat, and suspiciously stuffed bakery sticks are about as substantial as the fare gets, although the Ben &amp; Jerry's and graham crackers with Hershey Bars and marshmallow fluff make as good a late-night snack as any. The cappuccino machine, tub of Red Bull, and decent selection of munchies make 7-11 a worthy pre-cramming caffeine supplier or post-party break. Slow service and interminable lines makes for heavy traffic at (almost all) times. Beer and wine sold M-Sa 11am-10:45pm. Carding is very strict—those without Mass. ID should bring back-up. ATM. Lotto tickets. Slurpees. Sweet.
